GAC explores creation of ACM Top New Group Nominee Lady Antebellum in Introducing…
NASHVILLE, TN – March 05, 2008 -Looks, songs, talent and work ethic. According to veteran producer Paul Worley, those qualities are the reason Capitol Records Nashville’s newest recording group and current Academy of Country Music Top New Group nominee Lady Antebellum will make “it” in the country music industry.
The group, composed of Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott, are the second recording act whose journey to stardom is explored on GAC’s newest series, Introducing…, which premieres Thursday, March 20 (8:30 pm ET).
Haywood and Kelley met in middle school where they were musicians in “rival” bands. Upon meeting again in college, the two began making music together. Post-graduation Haywood tried his hand at a regular nine-to-five job but after finding it didn’t meet his expectations, he gave in to his Kelley’s persisting encouragement to move to Nashville to make music.
“We moved in with my brother (Josh) whether he wanted us or not,” remembers Kelley. “We crashed his house, moved in and immersed ourselves in songwriting.”
A few months later, Scott saw Kelley at a local hangout and recognized him from his MySpace page (she had discovered his music through his brother Josh’s page) and walked right up to introduce herself. She suggested they get together to write some songs. Hillary’s new addition to Haywood and Kelley’s songwriting efforts produced an unexplainable chemistry and the three decided to form a group.
“We were playing shows every two weeks for about two months at a club and we didn’t plan on having a lot of industry people coming to our shows,” recalls Haywood. “A few industry people came the first time -not many – then more came and before we knew it, we had a room full of people from Music Row. Finally, Mike Dungan with Capitol saw us, really dug us and brought us in to talk. So we kinda landed the deal that way.”
Adds Scott, “It was a crazy time because we were just playing to play and continuing to write songs and hang out. And when that happened, we welcomed it with open arms. You never think that just by meeting someone out one night in Nashville that something like this can happen.”
Happen it did, and now the group, whose moniker was inspired by a just-for-fun photo shoot in front of an Antebellum style home, is looking forward to the April 15 release of their self-titled debut album.
